When You Need a Photographer Pro…

I’m part of a pretty cool network, if I do say so myself. If you need a designer, developer, photographer, PR pro–you name it, if it’s somewhere in the field of creativity, marketing, or communications, chances are I know someone.

Phil Bode, photographer and drone operator, TILT photography

I met Phil via his sister, graphic designer Julee Bode of DragonFly Design. I’ve partnered with Phil a few times on people and places photography. He’s so easy to work with (and affordable!), not to mention a pro at capturing the moments that tell a story.

1. In one sentence, what do you do?

I’m a professional photographer and videographer who thrives working with clients to get them the images they need.

2. For what kinds of organizations?

I work with everyone from small to large business clients along with small, medium and large agencies.

3. What is the stickiest challenge for your clients?

I would say that the biggest challenge for my clients is to justify hiring a professional photographer and spending the money to get high quality images that showcase the products or people they are trying to promote.  A lot of companies believe that they can skimp on high quality images (due to cost) and they miss the opportunity to visually stand out from their competitors.

4. When it comes to photography, what are the biggest 'mistakes" you see on sites?

A big mistake that I see happen all the time is professional photographers/videographers cut corners and rely on "good enough" retouching and editing.  I’m a strong believer that you can and should push each edit to the best it can be. Within reason, of course, as some budgets dictate how much time you should spend on editing, but I feel there is never an excuse for handing off edits that are sub par.

5. What are people doing right?

I notice the projects that make me stop scrolling and study what they did.  When a photo or video gets you to stop and take a closer look at it, then the photographer has done their job correctly.

6. What's one thing you would say: "be sure you're doing this."

I usually tell my clients that you get what you pay for.  (Sounds cliche but it's true.) If you have a good design and good edits of photos or videos you will stand out in a crowded field.  Does that mean that you need to hire the biggest agency?  No; it just means that you need a good idea and a photographer who understands what you’re looking for and will collaborate with you to get your desired outcome.
