When You Need a Pro…

I’m part of a pretty cool network, if I do say so myself. If you need a designer, developer, photographer, PR pro – you name it, if it’s somewhere in the field of creativity, marketing, or communications, chances are I know someone.

Mimi Christikawa, website designer and thought partner, Mission Forward Design

1. In one sentence, what do you do?

I design and build websites that help organizations show up clearly, confidently, and in alignment with their mission.

2. For what kinds of organizations?

I mostly work with women and BIPOC-led small businesses, nonprofits, and social impact organizations, people who are often juggling so many responsibilities that their website ends up at the bottom of the list. I love helping them create a site that not only looks great but also eases their workload and supports the important work they’re already doing!

3. What is the stickiest challenge for your clients?

Definitely time and the mental load of having to learn something new. Many of my clients already have so much on their plate, so even when they know their website needs attention, it’s tough to find the bandwidth for it. As a former nonprofit worker, I get that it’s hard to prioritize design when you’re busy fundraising or running programs. I focus on keeping the process organized and approachable so it fits seamlessly into their day-to-day work.

4. When it comes to website design, what are the biggest 'mistakes" you see on sites?

Something that often gets overlooked is a website’s mobile experience. Tons of sites look great on desktop computers but can be frustrating to navigate on phones or tablets. Making sure buttons are tappable, menus are easy to use, and content scales properly helps keep your site functional across platforms.

Along the same lines, accessible design benefits everyone. Simple steps like adding descriptive alt text to images, ensuring colors have clear contrast, and using text large enough to read make your site more inclusive and enjoyable.

5. What are people doing right?

One of the biggest wins I see is when people bring their authentic voice and story into their site, trusting their lived experience and expertise. In a time when there is so much content to choose from, real photos and personal touches that reflect you or your community go a long way. Sites that openly share why they exist and who they serve build stronger connection and credibility. You don’t need to sound like a big brand or solely rely on AI - stay true to yourself and let your mission guide your site!

6. What's one thing you would say: "be sure you're doing this."

Keep your content easy to scan and make the next steps obvious. Visitors should quickly see what they can do whether that’s signing up for a newsletter, booking a session, or making a donation. Simple touches, like placing a clear “Register” or “Contact” button right after the text, ensure people can act without digging around and becoming frustrated.

Since most visitors won’t read everything on the page, it’s best to highlight the most important information at the top and speak the same language your audience does. Framing your content in a way that resonates with them helps people feel confident and comfortable engaging with your site.

With thoughtful content and clear actions, your site can truly showcase the impact you’re making and welcome visitors into your work with excitement!
